Ash’s weight issue could be the real culprit behind dodging the red carpet in France
If the Bollywood grapevines are to be believed, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has decided not to make an appearance in Cannes Film Festival later this summer to represent L'Oreal.
Nasty rumours doing the rounds of the tinsel town claim that the actress has decided to stay back home after getting tremendous negative publicity worldwide for not getting rid of the weight that she gained during pregnancy and after delivery in November 2011.

Beauty over brains
It is unfortunate that even in the 21st century, a woman's worth is weighed on the basis of her looks. While it might be politically correct to give points to the beauty contestants on their brains at international paegants by posing tricky questions to them, however, looks and looks alone rule the roost.

Even after almost two decades of winning the Miss World crown, Aishwarya is being forced by the society and the media to live up to her former beauty queen avatar.
Being a former beauty queen, an actress or a public figure does not mean that she cannot live her life on her own terms. She certainly needs a break from her country's obsessive concern about matters that are very personal.

Right decision?
Aishwarya's decision to give the Cannes a miss this time might be the correct one given the harsh criticism she seems to receive every time she steps out of home to attend a social do. She is photographed from every angle and her critics dissect each and every image in minute detail.
And if she attends the Cannes Film Festival, she would definitely have to walk down the red carpet, in which case she would probably be dissected by the international media right to her last inch and torn apart for not getting back to her original shape after delivery.
Staying at home with her baby is a much better idea than attending the red carpet under the given circumstances.
